Date and Nut Bread

1 c. chopped dates

1 c. boiling hot water

1 c. sugar

1 3/4 c. flour

1/2 c. chopped nuts

1 egg

2 tbsp. shortening

1 tsp. vanilla

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

Instructions

  1. Pour hot water over dates, add soda, and set aside.
  2. Cream shortening, sugar, and add the egg.
  3. Cream well. Add the dry ingredients, dates, nuts, and vanilla. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Pour into greased loaf pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes.
